Perth-based barber Etay Abraha has taken out the Fast Fade category at The Big Barber Bash Perth, marking a major milestone in a journey that has quickly evolved from in-shop training to independent creative development and competition success.
At just 20 years old, Etay is carving out a name for himself in the barbering industry through a blend of technical skill, personal expression, and cultural storytelling.
From Shop Foundations to Building a Personal Brand
With just under four years in the industry, Etay began his career working in a traditional barbershop, where he built a strong foundation in fundamentals and client work.
That early experience eventually led him toward a more independent direction.
Over the past few years, he has focused on developing his own home studio, refining his technique, and building a personal brand that reflects both his identity and creative direction.
A Winning Look Inspired by Heritage
Etay’s winning Fast Fade design was deeply influenced by his East African heritage, which played a central role in both the concept and execution of his competition piece.
He aimed to create a look that was more than just technically strong—it needed meaning.
“My winning look was heavily inspired by my East African heritage,” he explained. “I wanted to incorporate cultural elements through both the haircut and the overall concept, while still keeping it clean and modern.”
Beyond the design itself, the motivation carried personal significance.
“It was important for me to represent my community — especially being the first African to win a Big Barber Bash award — so there was a deeper purpose behind the look beyond just the technical side.”

Competing Among Top Talent
Despite the pressure of a live competition environment, Etay approached the event with a grounded mindset.
“It was an amazing experience,” he said. “I went into it with the mindset that whether I won or lost, I’d still gain something valuable.”
Surrounded by experienced barbers and a high level of creative energy, he found the experience as educational as it was competitive.
“The environment was full of talented barbers all expressing their own styles, and it became more about learning, networking, and being part of that energy. That’s what made it such a positive experience overall.”
A Humbling Milestone
Winning the Fast Fade title at such an early stage in his career has been both affirming and grounding for Etay.
“It’s honestly very humbling,” he said. “To be competing against barbers who have been in the industry much longer than I have, and to come away with a win at 20 years old, means a lot.”
Rather than viewing it as a final achievement, he sees it as a checkpoint in a longer journey.
“It gives me confidence that I’m on the right path, but at the same time, it keeps me grounded and motivated to keep improving.”
Looking Ahead
For Etay, the win has opened up new possibilities and encouraged deeper reflection on his future direction within the industry.
“At the moment, I’m still figuring that out,” he said. “This win has definitely opened my eyes and made me think more seriously about the direction I want to take.”
For now, his focus remains on growth and consistency.
“I’m focused on continuing to grow, improving my craft, and making the most of the opportunities that come from this.”
