Sebastien Walker, a 14-year-old barber from Coburg in Melbourne, has taken out the Fast Fade competition at The Big Barber Bash Melbourne, marking a standout moment in the early stages of his barbering journey.
What began as casual home haircuts has quickly evolved into a growing passion, a developing skill set, and now, competition success on a major stage.
From Family Cuts to a Growing Client Base
Sebastien started cutting hair at around 12 years old, initially practising on his brothers. Once he began high school, his skills quickly gained attention among his peers.
“All the boys would come over and line up for me to practise cutting and fading,” he said.
A strong interest in design work soon became part of his signature style, helping him stand out among his school community. Word spread quickly, and before long, students were travelling from across Melbourne’s north to sit in his chair.
That momentum led to a pivotal opportunity when a barber from Hilton’s noticed his work and offered to mentor him.
“He’s taught me a lot, and I’ve been there ever since,” Sebastien said.
A Winning Design Built for the Moment
Competing at The Big Barber Bash Melbourne, Sebastien entered the Fast Fade category with a clear focus: keep it sharp, clean, and effective under time pressure.
His winning look was created on his younger brother, who also served as his model for the competition.
“The winning design suited my model (my little bro) and I thought it would look sharp in the time I had,” he explained.

Stepping Up on the Competition Stage
Like many first-time competitors, Sebastien admitted the live environment was intimidating at first.
“Competing at The Big Barber Bash was nerve-racking,” he said. “There’s a lot of eyes on you, but as soon as I started, the music and the vibe were fun so I locked in and just got it done.”
Once the clippers were in motion, the nerves faded into focus—and the cut came together under pressure.
A Win That’s Just the Beginning
Taking out the Fast Fade title has had a major impact on Sebastien, both personally and professionally.
“Winning this has been absolutely mind blowing,” he said. “It has shown me hard work and dedication pays off and doing what you love is key.”
The experience has also opened doors within the industry, with barbers and professionals reaching out to connect and support his development.
“Meeting barbers like Jordan Tabakman was also very cool and inspiring. I’ve had so many barbers and people in the industry reach out and to be honest I feel this is just the beginning of what I can learn and become.”
Looking Ahead
Sebastien is already focused on what comes next: education, mentorship, and more competition experience.
“I would like to do some more education and hopefully have different mentors to guide me moving forward,” he said. “I will definitely enter some more comps for experience and continue to keep cutting and designing hair.”
From cutting his brothers’ hair in Coburg to winning on the Melbourne stage, Sebastien Walker’s journey is only just beginning—but the direction is already clear: growth, craft, and consistency.
