Perth barber Josiah Kovacevic has taken out the New Gen competition category at 2026 The Big Barber Bash, delivering an impressive performance in his first-ever competition appearance at just 16 years old.
Based in Perth, Josiah works at 1UP Barbershop in Cockburn and has been in the industry for around two years. Still early in his journey, he’s already carving out a clear identity focused on creativity and progression.
His winning look was driven by inspiration from social media, where he began exploring more creative design work and developing his own approach over time.
“I had seen a lot of creative designs online and I really liked what I saw,” Josiah said. “I just kept practising and eventually started coming up with my own ideas for the competition.”
Competing live at The Big Barber Bash was a major step up, with nerves playing a part early on before confidence settled in.
“It was crazy. It was my first competition and I was really nervous at 16, but after the first cut I started to feel relaxed and confident.”
For Josiah, the result represents more than just a win — it’s a sign of how far he’s already come.
“This win is a big step for me. I got out of my comfort zone and ended up placing in all three categories. I’m not afraid to take the next step — I’m ready to go above and beyond.”
Looking ahead, Josiah is already focused on building his career, with ambitions in education and brand partnerships.
“I want to work towards becoming an ambassador for a brand willing to work with a young barber. I also want to start educating upcoming barbers and showing my skill set.”
He’s also already setting his sights on returning next year.
“Next year I’ll be back at The Big Barber Bash and Expo4Barbers.”
