The future of barbering was the focus of a recent Ideas Lab hosted by The Big Barber Bash (TBBB), bringing together leading barbers, educators, training providers, and industry representatives to explore the opportunities and challenges facing the profession.
The collaborative session was designed to gather ideas and perspectives that will shape the future direction of TBBB to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the everyday barber.
Discussions centred on how the industry can better develop barbering craft, celebrate barbering culture, and strengthen community – three principles that sit at the heart of The Big Barber Bash.
Participants explored a broad range of topics, including the changing expectations of the next generation of barbers, the future of education and apprenticeships, the impact of social media and home-based businesses, and ways to reconnect a fragmented barbering community.
Participating were:
- Ben Divartis – BIBA Academy
- Fiona Beamish – CEO of Australian Hairdressing Council
- Gareth Philpott – Co-founder of The Barber Academy and The Hair Academy
- Joe Kurdyla – Director of Kings Domain Barber Salons
- Jordan Tabakman – The Barber Club Global and TBC Salons
- Liz Maher – Taylor Weit Hairdressing and Barbering Academy
- Suzie O’Brien – Owner of Studio X and Barber Academy NSW
TBBB Founder Carmelo Francese said the session reinforced the importance of listening to the industry and building the future together.
“The Big Barber Bash is about developing craft, celebrating barbering culture, and strengthening community. If we’re serious about making a positive impact, we need to keep listening to the people working behind the chair every day,” Carmelo said.
“The Ideas Lab wasn’t about having all the answers – it was about bringing together different perspectives, challenging our thinking, and making sure the future of TBBB reflects what the industry actually needs.
The quality of discussion was outstanding, and we’re excited about where these conversations will lead.”

Following three sold-out debut events across Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth in 2026, The Big Barber Bash is preparing for its next chapter, with plans to expand its national reach through major city events, selected regional activations, increased digital engagement, and stronger community initiatives.
Dates and locations for the 2027 Big Barber Bash tour will be announced soon.
Industry organisations, educators, brands, suppliers, and barbers interested in contributing to the future of TBBB are encouraged to get in touch and join the conversation.
